The Menlo Park Legends split their two game series against the Marysville Gold Sox.

The team traveled to Marysville only to fall short 8-2 in their first game Thursday evening, but made an impressive comeback 3-2 on Friday to bring their season record to 4-1.

On the mound for game one was Legends’ right-handed pitcher, Garret Bruce (Texas Tech). Bruce threw a solid three inning performance of no run ball. To start the bottom of the 4th, Bruce was replaced by middle relief pitcher Jonathan Hernandez (Champman) followed by Max Ritchie (Brown) in the 6th. Hernandez and Ritchie combined for four innings, giving up three runs. Nick Gagnon (Univeristy of North Dakota) came into the 8th giving up 5 runs, allowing the Gold Sox to pull away.

The game was a low scoring affair until the Gold Sox put out an offensive show in the 8th. Gold Sox outfielder Brandon Tripp-Cody (Florida International) hit a grand slam, putting the game out of reach. Gold Sox closing pitcher Aaron Herr came into the 8th. He had a shaky start to the  9th before closing the game 8-2 win for the Sox.

It was a tough first lost of the season, but the Legends were able to bounce back in Game two.

Game two started off as a pitchers’ dual. Legends’ starting pitcher Sean Thompson (Texas Tech) threw a near perfect four innings, giving up no hits, two walks and rung up 5 Gold Sox batters. Thompson was replaced by reliever Jackson Lancaster (Texas Tech) in the 5th and later Ryan Hogan (Mission College) in the 7th. Both pitchers gave up no runs, keeping the score 2-0. Richard Peoples (Missouri Western State) came in the 8th and struck out he first batter, only to give up 2 runs allowing the Gold Sox to tie the ballgame at 2-2.

In the 9th, the Legends were able to take the lead with some timely hitting starting with a triple by infielder Kyle Zirbes (Embry-Riddle Aeronautical). After two strikes, pinch-hitter Rob Henry (Brown) roped a single, bringing in Zirbes from third. The Legends victory against the Gold Sox earned them a well-deserved split in the series.

After this series, the Legends are focused on staying health as they get into the thick of this season. The team will return home to face the Walnut Creek Crawdad on June 10.
