Introducing the 2015 Legends Hitters
Summer is just around the corner and the 2015 Legends Roster is just about complete! The 2015 Legends team boasts over 25 division 1 players from various schools across the nation. With home games at Cañada College, the Legends have their hopes set high for a CCL North Division title.
Behind the Plate: At Catcher the Legends will have 3 different options to call on. Freshman Braden Frankfort (Santa Clara) has notched 10 starts for Santa Clara this spring and is hitting .231 with 3 doubles and 5 RBI. Power hitting Catcher and First baseman Logan Spurlin (Northern Kentucky) will also see innings behind the dish this summer. After leading his team in hitting in 2014 with a .350 average and 4 HR’s, Spurlin is hitting .227 this spring with 3 HR’s. Logan should be a staple behind the dish and in the middle of the order for the Legends. Cañada College alumni Justin Gubser (Purdue) will also be a core member of the Legends battery. An all conference catcher in 2014, power hitting Gubser should also find himself in the crouch many innings this summer.
At First Base: Leading his team in hitting, John Montgomery (Eastern Michigan) is hitting .311 with 4 HR’s and 5 doubles. A left handed bat, John will give the Legends some options at first base as he can also play some outfield. Backing up Montgomery will be a plethora of talented utility players including catcher Spurlin and Gubser. The Legends lone 2 way player, Justin Edgar, a lefty pitcher/first baseman from local JC DeAnza should also offer some relief to Montgomery at first base.
At the Hot Corner: Out of Missouri State, Jake Burger is set to be the Legends everyday third baseman. Leading his team in hitting as a true freshman, Burger is batting .337 with 16 doubles and 3 HR’s and is just a freshman. Burger will be backed up by the utility infielder and 2014 returner Dylan Cook (Georgia College). Also leading his team in hitting Dylan hit .388 with 16 doubles and 6 HR’s this season while getting the majority of his starts at 2B. Dylan saw playing time at all infield positions last summer including some outfield. A Menlo-Atherton alumni like Zirbes and Legends Manager David Klein, Dylan is a special talent who can do it all on defense and at the plate.
Up the Middle: The Legends have 4 talented middle infieldes who will be platooning throughout the course of the summer. 3 year Legends veteran Kyle Zirbes (Embry-Riddle) will be one of the 2 lone Legends returners from the 2014 Legends team. Capable of playing all 3 infield positions the speedy Zirbes offers the Legends some veteran leadership and the ability to play multiple positions.
Joining Gubser from Purdue is second baseman Cody Strong (Purdue). Strong set records in 2014 for Purdue with the amount of double plays turned. The regular 2 hole hitter for his team, Strong will be flipping double plays all summer long. Also up the middle will be Bay Area product Brian Hsu (BYU). As a true freshman Hsu was BYU’s opening day starter before a little hitting skid. Hsu will be getting back on track this summer and should see regular time on the left side of the infield. Carlmont HS product Kyle Barrett (Arkansas Little Rock) will also be holding down the middle of the diamond for the Legends. Know for his athletic ability, expect Barrett to push the other infielders for time up in the middle.
In Center field: The Legends have 2 speedy center fielders who are coming off monster season. Rob Henry (Brown) is up for Ivy League player of the Year after hitting .363 with 17 doubles and 2 HR’s and leading his team in nearly every offensive category. Rob will share time with Tobias Moreno, a speedy left handed hitter out of Embry Riddle who is hitting .370 with 10 doubles and a whopping 27 steals. These athletic centerfields will cover a lot of ground in that large Cañada College outfield.
Corner Outfield: Holding down the corner outfield are 3 talented Division 1 outfielders. Left handed draft prospect out of Texas Tech, Anthony Lyons will be a major part of the Legends outfield core. Coming of the bench for the #21 ranked Red Raiders, Lyons has been their most reliable pinch hitter boasting a .317 average in 41 plate appearances. Also out of the Midwest is Missouri State outfielder
Matt Dezort who should be a sparkplug for the 2015 Legends. Dezort is hitting .298 for Missouri State and will have many big at bats for the Legends this summer. Lastly, out of Saint Francis HS in Mountain View is Ryan McSwain. McSwain has had some ups and downs this season but has a pair of homeruns and is hitting .224 for Arkansas Little Rock. Expect the 2015 Legends lineup to have some serious power at the plate and speed on the basepaths. Fire it up!
