July 28, 2011 – Menlo Park Legends 13, Pro Player Baseball 7

Yesterday, the Menlo Park Legends intercollegiate semipro baseball team defeated Pro Player Baseball 13-7 in their final contest of the season at Menlo College in Atherton.

Menlo Park’s starter Michael Olmstead had trouble finding the strike zone and was pulled in the first inning after allowing six runs.

The Legends faced a huge 6-0 deficit after one half-inning, yet the game was far from over. Johnny Donati began the rally with a single to center field, and from then on the chips fell into place for Menlo Park. Pierson Jeremiah and Grant Nelson both singled, loading the bases up for Brian Haggett. He responded with a two-run single that put the Legends on the board. Joe Goldenberg stepped up to the plate and launched a three-run home run to left-center field, brining the Legends within one run. Immediately following Goldenberg’s home run, Chris Hoo delivered a solo shot over the left field fence, tying the game up at 6.

Nick Sours came in to pitch midway through the first after Olmstead was pulled and retired eleven consecutive batters through the fourth inning. With his flawless performance on the mound and the hitters hot bats, Menlo Park was able to add six more runs to their total by the end of the fourth.

In the third inning, Goldenberg led off with a single. Hoo then was hit by a pitch, and then Tommy Pluschkell singled to load the bases. Dan Brown then was walked, scoring Goldenberg. Tyger Pederson hit a single that scored Hoo, and then Donati hit a sac fly, scoring Pluschkell and advancing Brown to third. Jeremiah then hit into a fielders choice that scored Pederson, giving the Legends a 10-6 lead through three full innings. They added two more runs in the fourth off of a throwing error and a Haggett double.

Goldenberg would end the game going 2-for-4 with four runs batted in, and Haggett 2-for-3 with three RBI’s.

Luke McCreesh came in to pitch for the Legends in the fifth inning and allowed one run. In the eighth, Rich McCaffery came in and struck out two in a one, two, three inning. Curtis Camilli retired three in a row in the ninth with one strikeout as well.

Player and manager David Klein felt that this win ended a great season on a very positive note.

“I’m really proud of the team,” he said. “It has been an honor to play with and coach these guys this year. We had a rigorous schedule traveling up and down the coast and managed to beat the number two and ten teams in the nation. For a local, community based program playing against teams that have been around for over thirty years, this was a tremendously successful season.”

Thanks to all the fans and supporters for a Legendary 2011 Summer!
